A Minnesota Department of Public Service Tool

If you are like most small business owners, you are probably looking for ways to improve your cash flow without sacrificing a lot of time (which you don't have), investment money (which is probably limited), or the comfort of your employees and customers (who must be kept satisfied).

with these concerns in mind, we have produced tech Small Business Energy Investment Portfolio. This series of guides provides practical, easy-to-understand recommendations that will increase your cash flow, improve your building's comfort level, and maybe even give you more time! Some of the guides also list financial and professional services that are available to you that you may not be aware of.

These guides are produced by the Department of Public Service, Energy Division especially for Minnesota's business owners and are free of charge. To receive any of the guides listed below, simply call the Energy Information Center at 296-5175 (or 1-800-657-3710 toll free).

Lighting - Recommended for all business owners, this guide helps you evaluate your present lighting system, provides specific cost-saving strategies and describes a number of new lighting options now on the market.

Electric Use - Since electricity often accounts for the largest portion of your energy expenditures, the cost-saving measures in this guide are commended for all businesses. It also explains how electric use is measured, how rate classifications are determined and helps you analyze your current electric use.

Kitchen Equipment - This guide is designed for the business with a kitchen as part of its operation. The guide emphasizes low/no cost operation and maintenance strategies, but also included recommendations for more expensive improvements, such as adding ventilation systems or replacing equipment.

Building Envelope - This guide covers a wide range of ideas for improving the overall efficiency of your building "envelope" or shell. Specific tips include how to locate air leaks and how to stop them, how to improve the efficiency of doors and windows, and where to add insulation.

HVAC - This guide addresses various improvements that can be made to your heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems. Strategies range from simple no-cost adjustments in operation to recommendations for equipment replacement. It also includes instructions for developing your own plan of action and a list of available resource people who can help analyze your needs.

Conversion to Wood - This guide discusses the benefits and strategies involved with using wood as a fuel source. It covers the types of wood fuels available, typical applications, four types of combustion systems and practical considerations such as sizing a system, heat storage, safety and economics. Three case studies show how businesses are using wood burning systems to save fuel costs and an extensive appendix lists wood chip suppliers across Minnesota.

Swimming Pools - This guide offers a number of practical recommendations for reducing the energy costs related to indoor swimming pools. Specific areas covered are reducing evaporation losses, improving ventilation, and modifying lighting and heating systems.

Domestic Hot Water - This guide offers a number of practical recommendations for reducing the cost of producing and using hot water. It presents strategies for small tank heaters, as well as for larger systems that provide hot water for process loads, such as for kitchens and laundries. It also includes information on new high-efficiency equipment and methods of heat recovery.

Refrigeration - This guide is recommended for anyone who operates refrigeration equipment, including air conditioners. It provides a good discussion on the basics of refrigeration cycles and individual system components, as well as listing a number of operation and maintenance techniques that will save money and energy.

Cogeneration - Cogeneration is a system that produces both electrical and heat energy in the same process, with potential significant savings for some businesses. This guide helps businesses determine whether they are good candidates for cogeneration and tells them how to obtain the necessary additional information.
